What is A Home Standby Generator

A home standby generator is essentially an internal combustion engine which runs on either natural gas or propane. This engine powers a generator which produces electricity. The backup system is comprised of a generator and an automatic transfer switch.  The unit is hard-wired directly into a home or businesses electrical system.

The  system constantly monitors incoming utility power. When there is an interruption of service, the switch automatically  transfers the source of power from the utility grid  to the standby generator. The generator then starts up and supplies power to a set of dedicated home circuits.

This whole process happens within seconds of power loss leaving you in relative uninterrupted comfort. When utility power returns, the transfer switch reconnects utility power to the home and the generator shuts down returning standby mode. When choosing a standby generator for your home or office, there are a few things to consider. Do you want to power your entire property, or do you only need to power up the necessities? It’s essential that you run power to your furnace and hot water systems as well as refrigerators and some lights and outlets. Amenities like televisions and computers are usually a large consideration as well.
